                                                                      Beaufort

Heading north to Beaumont we're noticing  the landscape is changing.  We're seeing pine trees, sandy beaches and not so many marshes.  The color of the ICW water is changing  from muddy brown to blue green, especially where there are ocean inlets. The weather is becoming cooler and less humid.  The style of homes are changing from southern with pillars to more cape cod style.
Most of the homes along the ICW look like big, empty second homes.

                                                             Flying the Confederate flag.

The ICW passes right through Camp Lejume and there are targets set up right next to the water.  Artillery practcie was publicly advertised everywhere for tomorrow.  The ICW closes down while they are shooting.

There are crab pot markers all over the marked channel.

There are two Beauforts, one in north Carolina and one in South Carolina.  The South Carolina one is  much better .  We were expecting a lot more here as it was small and not that much to see.

We had our toughest harbor entrance so far  getting into the Town Creek Marina.   I changed marinas on Bill at the last moment (I found a better one) so he hadn't done the navigation for it. There was lots of metal in the area (a massive bridge structure under construction) so our instruments weren't working correctly. There were very confusing red and green channel markers, it seemed like everywhere,  marking 3 different long, zig zaggy channels.  We arrived at low tide, the winds were around 25 miles per hour (higher than predicted!) sandbars were showing around us, and we had to go under a bridge under construction at the harbor entrance  with working barges.   We hit a sandbar  briefly but got off.  Docking was tough with the wind.  It couldn't have been harder. He did an awesome job!

I think they felt  sorry for Bill having to navigate into the marina under those conditions.  They gave him a free marina hat.
Bridge at the harbor entrance that  Bill had to navigate though

We bought diesel at $1.55/gallon.

They let us use the free courtesy car as long as we wanted- just had to return the keys in the morning.
No paperwork for it - just a signout signature.
