Two Days in the Georgia Salt Marshes/Swamps

-We've heard from fellow loopers that the crooked, snakelike, coastline of Georgia with the swamps/ marshes was their least favorite part of the whole loop.  We know why.

-Bill spent days stressing and checking the navigation, shallow spots, tide tables  weather and currents before we started. He did an awesome job getting us through here with no mishaps!!  We debated about going out to the Atlantic  for this section, but the ocean didn't  cooperate.

-It was a 90 mile stretch  for us with no marinas and no towns from St. Simon's Island to Savannah. It is shallow, full of shoals with constantly shifting sand.  The charts weren't necessarily correct with the shifting sand.  Hell's Gate was 4.7 depth,  when we came through, our draft is 3.9.  The tides, 7 feet here, and current are a big issue.

The bugs are ferocious and it is full of alligators.  It is full of dolphins too - that was cool. The good??  It's done, it was different than anything we have ever seen and  we won't forget it!

The Intercoastal Waterway through Georgia- it passes behind barrier islands

-We anchored out at Walburg Creek off the northwest side of St. Catherines Island. It was eerie at night as it was so dark and we were so alone.   I'm a chicken at night.  The bugs were loud!  We couldn't get off the boat after a long day on the water (which I hate) as the banks were swampy.
