More from the Erie Canal, NY
Westpoint Military Academy - huge and impressive - looks like a medieval castle - on the Hudson River north of Half Moon Marina, about 50 miles north of New York City
The Hudson River around here is 125 feet deep and the water is 60 degrees. Air is 74 degrees.
Bug season is just beginning.......no problem so far but we can tell it is coming.
There is lots of floating timber on the river. Bill is constantly having to maneuver around it.
All kinds of boat traffic here
1871 lighthouse
They build lighthouses over any large obstacle (sandbars, rocks) in the water -t here are lots of these lighthouses.
Lots of big, old mansions that you see from the water (we are only an hour form New York City). I am down below cleaning and fixing lunch - Whenever Bill sees a mansion he rings the large brass bell and yells MANSION so I don't miss any.
Bannermans Island Arsenal castle - used to be full of ammunition for???
Lots of tows and tugs on the river.
Almost everything in these little towns is closed on Sundays.
Lots of people smoke.
People seem to be drinking mixed drinks , versus just wind and beer, much more so than on the West Coast.
Stayed at Amerstedam tied up on the wall for the night. We had dinner at the dockside restaurant with another boating couple we just met who from Maine - they are doing the Eastern Loop which goes up into Quebec and Nova Scotia.
Bill's mom studies geneology and had told us many times that Bill was related to the Herkimer family (General Herkimer helped establish this area) . What are the odds of seeing their 1800's home from the river just out of the blue?
I drove the boat totally myself (for the first time!) for about 20 miles in and out of locks.........and the boat is still intact!
