Green Turtle Cay
Green Turtle Marina
It was a twelve mile trip from Spanish Cay to Green Turtle Cay. We have a slip at Green Turtle Marina , a really nice place where we've been for 4 days. The weather turned nasty with a "gale" (35-50 winds predicted), so we are holed up here. The weather is coming from the northwest and our marina is south facing.
Green Turtle is a really beautiful island, 3 1/2 miles by 1/2 mile.
Ther are private homes, some marinas and the town of Old Plymouth (population 250) on one end. There is a wide range of income levels with some very wealthy homes. Property is very expensive. We are VERY fortunate to be here on a boat, as to rent a place here is really pricey $3000. or so per week and hard to come by.
At Spanish Cay we met a man, Les, who was single handling his sailboat. When we arrived here we were next to him again. He came over and brought us warm, home made brownies he had just made onboard. We keep running into the same boaters marina to marina.
The weather and water temperature has not been what we expected. The days are averaging 62-72, nights are 60-65 and the water is 66 degrees, almost always windy. We can't complain with the weather they are gettting at home in the northeast and midwest.
Same spider plant I have hanging in a pot at home - only this is 20 feet tall!
The Bahamas are all about conch. They are on every beach. The restaurants all serve conch every way you can imagine - fried conch, conch burgers, conch fritters, conch salad, conch chowder.
Conch shells line the roads. The roads are made of ground coral and conch shells.
conch shells on the gravestones
coral decorating the walls (coral is everywhere)
