The day has finally come where we get to “oficially” rename
our boat. Our boat is registered with
the US Coastguard so they have to give permission before it can be
renamed. Finally we got the OK to change
the name. According to legend the name
change is supposed to be very unlucky unless you go through the proper
procedure to change it. Apparently you
need to appease Poseidon the god of the sea and purge the boats name from the
ledger of the deep and Poseidon’s memory. No one really believes this stuff,
but almost all boat owners do this ceremony not wanting to tempt fate (and
besides its fun!). Apparently the
Titanic never had a boat naming ceremony and the USS Arizona used water instead
of champagne in their ceremony.
For the ceremony Bill and I stood on the deck of the boat
with all our friends on the dock in front of us. Bill read the 2 pages of the official
renaming and then the naming ceremony – a lot of long old fashioned words that
could barely be pronounced. He threw a
fake gold coin with the name “Entrée” on it into the water. I poured the champagne for him as he said
the correct words. He threw the champagne to the north, south east and west and
then christened the boat with it. So, in
a nutshell the ceremony involved a lot of words you can’t pronounce and a lot
of champagne! Now our boat can have good
fortune, be lucky and live up to its new name, “Perfect Day”.
It was very cool that so many people came to our boat naming
ceremony. Al, (from our flotilla) went
down the dock inviting all the Loopers around to come over. We probably had 20-25 people there. We had a cake with the boat's
new name, a lot of champagne and food. Charlie, Al, Dennis and Carole gave us the icebucket, champagne and glasses as a gift. It was very fun!!!
