                                                      Demopolis, Al.

Demopolis is the last town for the 219 mile trip to Mobile Bay. We stayed here for an extra day because of bad weather.  It’s a town of 7,500 people with a lot of Civil War history.  Actually most of the towns around here have Civil War history!  We got all our provisions here as there are no more marinas and we will be anchoring out (except for Bobby’s Fish Camp)..
The marina is really spread out so they let you use  a golf cart to get around.  They also let you use a courtesy car to get to town.  We used the golf cart to get the courtesy car, went to dinner and came back late at night.  The problem was that the golf cart had no lights, the roads were total mud as it had just rained a lot,  there was no moon, no signs, no people and nothing around.  We had to use the light from our cell phones to drive back ........

the famous Epes white cliffs  (they're made of chalk)

Paying for diesel at the fuel dock was pretty tough (we hold 300 gallons). We felt better when the tug boat at the dock got 15,000 gallons he had to pay for.  He told us that the biggest tugs take 30-40,000 gallons of diesel.

The southern food is really different.  Everything is fried or has a sauce or gravy on it. Typical is fried okra, fried green beans, fried green tomatoes, creamed corn or creamed green beans, biscuits and gravy, grits, hushpuppies, fried catfish or fried chicken.  Macaroni and cheese is a vegetable  At a local restaurant “nachos” were homemade potato chips with fried crawdads and roulade sauce.

On one side of the river spring is arrivng and things are beginning to bloom, the other side not at all- too strange!
