Hilton Head Island
-This was an easy 30 mile trip from Savannah through the winding salt marshes to get here.
-The Intercoastal Waterway water is dark brown and muddy. Kayaking is not even a thought for me. It looks like an alligator haven.
-Tides here are 8 feet. We have to factor high tide time into our travel times. Certain spots are only 41/2 feet of water at low tide and we draw 3'9"". We timed it right and had no problems.
Red rocking chairs are everywhere. They were even set up on the golf course for the upcoming PGA tournament.
Of course you need bike washing stations to rinse the beach sand off...
low tide - tides are a big deal here
-We spent the first 2 nights at Harbor Town Marina on the south end of the island, and the next 2 nights at Shelter Cove in the middle of the island.
- Hilton Head is a gorgeous, very expensive place. There are giant oak, pine and palm trees with hanging spanish moss in them everywhere. The island is about 10 miles by 5 miles wide. The Atlantic side has a very wide white sand beach that you can ride bikes on. Cars would be OK too but they don't allow it. They have 60 miles of bike paths, and 15,000 rental bikes on the island. Golf and tennis resorts cover Hilton Head with only a small amout of it really open to the general public.
-We have never seen so many well groomed doges!
-We rode our bikes to a tennis exhibition at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center . Got lost getting there and had to ride an extra 1 hour and it was getting dark. It was great and I won a door prize -2 tennis hats. Bill got free beer and didn't even complain too bad. Had to ride home in the dark though....
Alligator signs in all the ponds
-It is golf heaven -tons of gorgeous courses. They were setting up stands on the golf course for the Heritage Golf Classic - a huge PGA event.
-So far we've been really lucky with the weather. We've been missing the rain and it's getting warmer all the time - about 65-70 degrees now.
