Tarpon Springs - Greek and Sponges

Greek pasteries - the bakeries here are unbelievable

We are finally experiencing the warm weather and warm water that we have dreamed  of.  Crossing the Gulf and going 170 miles south has made all the difference.   The warm Florida weather is not in the pan handle of Florida!

Tarpon Springs is a Greek town that revolves around the "sponge" industry. The divers cut the sponges from the sea floor .  Between the sponge docks and the Greek food it is really different and fun. There was also a street fair going on. There are lots of little islands of vegetation off the shore. The bike path here goes 45 miles south to Clearwater. Tarpon Springs was so nice and  we were so tired from the crossing that we stayed for 3 days.

We had a couple of really great Greek meals.  We even had the flaming Greek cheese that's so popular here  (they pour liquor on, light it on fire and then douse it with lemon juice).

We went out to dinner 3 nights in a row with 3 different couples – so social!  We went out with with each of the couples that we crossed the Gulf with, and then Al and Charlie (part of our old flotilla) drove up from down south and met us. Al  stopped by West Marine and picked up a boat battery for us that we badly needed. Charlie and E.J.  (we crossed with) had a rental car and offered to take us to Walmart for provisions.  Don't think they expected we would be getting 2 shopping carts of stuff and fill up their whole trunk.   We haven't had a chance to buy real supplies for a month  (can't buy a lot when you walk or bike to the store which isn't even close by!)

One of the very best things about this trip is all the wonderful people we have met along the way.  So many people have gone out of their way to help us - it is amazing.
