Grand Haven Seawall, everyone wanted to be on the seawall |
We have never seen anything like boating in Grand Haven. After traveling down Lake Michigan about 28 miles from the small town of Pentwater we pulled closer to Grand Haven. We could not believe our eyes. There were about a hundred small fishing boats right outside the harbor entrance for the salmon run and there were 50 sailboats racing next to the fishing boats. All of this had to be dodged just to get to the entrance.
Then once inside the harbor entrance there were hundreds and hundreds of boats (I am not exaggerating) of every make and size you could imagine coming up the channel leaving almost no space to maneuver into the channel.
When we called the marina they told us the full and we could tie-up to the sea wall right downtown. It was a mad house. A constant flow of boats passing us to leave the harbor until about 6 PM and then about 3 more hours of the same boats passing us coming back in the harbor. We were bouncing around like a bobber and on the other side of us was a park and walkway with non- stop bikers, skaters, and walkers similar to the Strand in Hermosa Beach on the 4th of July. Someone told me it was always like this, especially when it is in the mid 80s.
Grand Haven Seawall
OK, this isn't my picture of the seawall, but it seemed this crowded
